About Mahalia

Mahalia Mabo is a proud Nywaigi, Manbarra and Meriam woman. She comes from a long line of artists and creatives. Her paternal grandparents were the late Eddie Koiki Mabo and Dr Bonita Mabo. Both of whom were not only amazing activists but also artists. Mahalia's father, a sculpturist, her mother and maternal grandmother both painters and both her sisters talented artists. Her art reflects her deep connection to her family (in particular her grandmother, Bonita, who was the matriarch of the family), Country and culture. She is a storyteller and her art is often accompanied by stories of memories from her childhood, growing up with her Grandmother in the family home on Hibiscus Street.
